Congratulations to our 2 finalists Hannah Wilkinson and Scarlett Gardner from Stockton Sixth Form College for their amazing work that was shortlisted to be exhibited at Mima at the Great Create Showcase Competition.
Scarlett Gardner went on to win the School and College Students category with a Graphite pencil drawing.
Scarlett’s pencil drawing depicts the progress ideas around sustainability throughout the generations. The work features the townscape of Yarm inside a lightbulb, held by young and aged hands, intertwined with vines to symbolise growth in sustainable ways of thinking. The works aims to demonstrate how we can repair and restore the environmental damage caused by previous generations if we work together.
The standard of entries that were judged by a panel of industry experts was phenomenal.
Finalist Hannah Wilkinson displayed an amazing sculpture using found upcycled plastic items to highlight dangers of plastic polluting. A combination of waste plastic bags and bottles have been dyed with ink and painted to create a coral reef. A jellyfish made using wire seeks to inspire people to use their creativity to consider how our plastic pollution ends up in the ocean.
The pop-up display was curated with sustainability in mind as part of the on-going work dedicated to the environment. The display will remain in place until the 5 May 2024 and is definitely worth a visit
